During the time of the great dynasties of Japan, 5-year old Nana-hime and a little boy vowed that they would marry each other, but they were tragically separated without ever learning each other's true identities. Now, at the age of 17, Nana-hime is still unmarried and her mother is restless. She forces her daughter to try to enter the imperial court, and miraculously succeeds.
